Remembering James J. Daly, Former Chairman of the HKS Board of Trustees
James J. Daly, former Chairman of the Helen Keller Services Board of Trustees and Trustee Emeritus, passed away on November 2, 2026, at the age of 89.
Helen Keller Services mourns the passing of James J. Daly, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Trustee Emeritus, who died peacefully at home on November 2, 2026, at the age of 89. Jim served on the HKS Board for many years and led it as Chairman until 2010, when his nephew, Christopher Maher, succeeded him.
Born in Brooklyn, the same borough where Helen Keller Services was founded in 1893, Jim built a distinguished legal career, retiring as Senior Partner and Chairman of the Executive Committee of DeForest & Duer, one of New York City’s oldest law firms. Over his lifetime he served as a trustee of more than 35 institutions, with a particular focus on education, nursing and care for people with disabilities. Helen Keller Services held a special place among them. His family describes a humble man who lived by the Jesuit ideal of being a “man for others” and preferred that his good work remain anonymous. Those who served alongside him remember his wisdom, his generosity and his gracious leadership, which helped HKS support individuals who are blind, have low vision, or are DeafBlind to live, work, and thrive in the communities they call home.
The Board, staff and participants of Helen Keller Services extend our deepest sympathy to his wife of 65 years, Denise, his seven children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his nephew, Christopher Maher, who carries on Jim’s legacy of service as a member of our Board of Trustees. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Viscardi Center.
Jim’s full obituary and guest book are available on the Fairchild Sons Funeral Home website.
