Last week, Scott Davert, tech expert and Lead Research and Training Specialist at Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), was joined by Bryan Ward, Coordinator of iCC Programs, along with Kevin Dobens and Jess Borin, Senior Instructors of Technology with HKNC, at the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference in Anaheim, California. The team immersed themselves in accessibility innovation, exploring next-generation technologies that expand possibilities for individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, or have low vision.

The CSUN Assistive Technology Conference is the largest gathering dedicated to technology and accessibility for people with disabilities. This year’s milestone 40th conference drew thousands of researchers, educators, practitioners, and exhibitors from across the globe, all united in advancing accessibility through innovation.

Among the many innovations showcased was OneCourt, a service that could significantly transform how DeafBlind individuals experience live sports. For Scott, a passionate sports enthusiast, this discovery was particularly meaningful. “One of the highlights for me this year was discovering OneCourt, which may allow me to enjoy live sports again as a DeafBlind person,” shares Scott. This service, along with many other advancements, will be featured in Scott’s upcoming comprehensive article analyzing key developments from the conference.

During the conference, Scott evaluated breakthrough devices designed specifically for the DeafBlind community, testing tactile interfaces and communication tools that could transform daily independence. The team also engaged in discussions with partners organizations like American Printing House about accessibility solutions and collaboration.

Innovation on Display

Across the exhibition floor, innovative technologies demonstrated how accessibility continues to advance. Enhanced refreshable braille displays, AI-driven screen readers with advanced image description capabilities, and real-time captioning solutions are reshaping digital accessibility. Navigation tools help users move confidently through unfamiliar spaces, while tactile and audio interfaces create new pathways to digital content. These innovations provide users with more independence in education, employment, and daily life, reinforcing technology’s transformative power in breaking down barriers.

For the DeafBlind community, these advancements enhance connection, community engagement, and personal autonomy. Technologies that may seem incremental to the general public often create profound shifts in how individuals navigate their worlds and participate fully in education, employment, and community life.

Walking the exhibition floor, our team could feel the sense of community and shared purpose among developers, users, and advocates alike. In this atmosphere of innovation attendees were definitely excited by the presence of legendary musician Stevie Wonder, who continues his longtime advocacy for accessible technology and inclusion.
