Helen’s 5K Run/Walk is Helen Keller Services’ annual fundraising event, bringing runners, walkers, and the Long Island community together in support of individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, or have low vision. Sponsorship dollars go directly toward Destiny Home and the communication access services provided at the Helen Keller National Center, including ASL and tactile interpreting, Support Service Providers, and assistive technology.

Check-in and registration open at 7:45 AM, with the race starting at 9:30 AM on a USATF-certified course. A post-race celebration with refreshments and an awards ceremony follows. A virtual participation window (September 14-26) lets supporters anywhere in the country join in.

What Your Sponsorship Supports

Destiny Home
Destiny Home is the only group home in New York State certified by the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to serve individuals who are DeafBlind with intellectual disabilities. Since 2008, Destiny Home has provided 24-hour support for four to five permanent residents in Port Washington, NY. Residents hold jobs in the community, volunteer locally, and participate actively in Port Washington daily life. Staff members are trained in a range of alternative communication methods, including tactile and visual sign language, specialized apps, object cues, and iPad accessibility features.

Communication Access at HKNC
HKNC is the only national center of its kind, providing rehabilitation, training, and transition services to DeafBlind youths and adults across the United States. Funds raised will support communication and environmental access at HKNC, including ASL interpreting, tactile interpreting, Support Service Provider (SSP) services, and assistive technologies. These services are foundational to the independence of DeafBlind individuals, enabling participation in job training, workplace settings, community engagement, and advocacy.
