After connecting with Helen Keller Services’ Regional Services Coordinator Marilyn Trader about 12 years ago, Anthony R. has transformed from someone who believed his only career option was sewing to becoming one of Tennessee’s most promising assistive technology trainers for the DeafBlind community.

Anthony’s growth accelerated during his time at Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), where he received specialized training and later served as an assistive technology trainer intern through the Professional Learning and Leadership Institute (PLLI). This experience allowed him to develop valuable teaching skills working with both individuals and small groups, where his eloquent way of presenting and sharing his journey became evident. His natural abilities also position him as an incredible potential mentor for transition-age youth in Tennessee.

Today, Anthony supports seven clients across Tennessee as an iCanConnect (iCC) trainer and is actively expanding his caseload. His fun, easygoing personality and genuine dedication create a supportive environment where clients feel comfortable, supported, and empowered to learn and grow.

Working closely with his DeafBlind Employment Specialist (DBES) Stephanie Poppell, Anthony continues building his technical skills with the ICC Database KLAS system, learning to process service requests, document training sessions, and develop deeper understanding of each consumer’s unique needs. His confidence with the system continues to grow each day. He’s also exploring Haptic Communication techniques and effective collaboration with Support Service Providers (SSPs) during training sessions to ensure clear, accessible communication for his students.

Anthony’s commitment extends beyond his primary role—he actively contributes to SSP trainings statewide, helping expand the network of qualified professionals supporting the DeafBlind community. The State Deaf Centers are planning more SSP trainings and look forward to having him involved again as they increase this vital service. His involvement with the Tennessee Organization of the DeafBlind further demonstrates his growing commitment to advocacy, community engagement, and leadership in the field. With his passion for technology, commitment to service, and natural teaching abilities, Anthony is already making a meaningful difference for DeafBlind Tennesseans—and his impact continues to grow.
