Sr. Bernadette Wynne smiling into the camera
Sr Bernadette Wynne
March 2, 1934 to February 21, 2018

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sr. Bernadette Wynne – better known as Bernie – on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.  She died peacefully with friends and family by her side at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone, New York. With her passing, HKNC has lost a dear friend, a truly dedicated educator and an example for all of us of how to live the good life filled with love and laughter.

Bernie was hired in 1975 by HKNC as a certified teacher of people with vision loss when the Center was still in the old building in New Hyde Park.  Moving over to the Sands Point location, Bernie soon became the supervisor of the Basic Education Department (now known as CLC).  She became legendary at HKNC as one of the first members of the National Training Team (NTT) which began in 1981.

The NTT traveled extensively throughout the United States and Bernie often traveled to the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark) to educate professionals about people with a combined hearing and vision loss.    Another of Bernie’s many ccomplishments was working with Northern Illinois University to establish post-secondary education degrees and certification programs for professionals. She continued her work as a member of the NTT until her retirement in 2013 after 38 years with HKNC.

Bernie has our love and eternal gratitude for all she contributed to making the Center what it is today.  We are thankful for the special memories of her warmth and joy and friendship and for the example of a life well lived.

May she rest in peace.
