Kelly Brittingham

Arizona DeafBlind Employment Specialist

During the month of October 2022, Kelly Brittingham joined the HKNC team. Throughout her K-12th years of school, she grew-up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In high school, she met one sign language interpreter and one girl who was Deaf. Kelly began to mingle with both the sign language interpreter, the girl who was Deaf, and the small Deaf Community on the Eastern Shore. Later, she moved to the Western Shore of Maryland for both education and career purposes. She obtained an Associate’s of Applied Science A.A.S. degree in General Education with an Interpreter Training Program (ITP)/Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) Certificate from the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) – Catonsville, and then obtained a Bachelor’s of Science B.Sc. in Deaf Studies degree with a Human Service track from Towson University (TU). At the January 2013 Towson University graduation ceremony, Kelly was the first student and Deaf Studies graduate in the history of Towson University to be selected to sign “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Maryland, My Maryland” on stage at the graduation ceremony. Later, Kelly moved to Texas where she obtained a Master’s in Special Education with a focus on Orientation and Mobility (O&M) and Dual Sensory Impairment/DeafBlind (DB) Certificates from Texas Technology University (TTU). While living in Texas, she won the Marty Murrell Excellence in Education Award while working at Round Rock Independent School District with a Deaf Education Team at McNeil High School as an Intervener/Intervenor for one DeafBlind student. Kelly has worked as a freelance Sign Language Interpreter (SLI), Support Service Provider (SSP)/Co-Navigator (CN), Intervener/Intervenor, Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist, and Case Manager. As a freelance SLI, she worked with a variety of hard-of-hearing, Deaf, and DeafBlind individuals with different backgrounds, situations, and areas to provide communication access. As a freelance SSP/CN, I work with a variety of DeafBlind individuals to provide an independent atmosphere, without having to depend only on family and friends, by providing transportation, both enjoyment and food shopping, both medical and training appointments, social events, and a variety of other situations. As an Intervener/Intervenor, I worked in a school system with a high school student providing visual and auditory access while mentoring. As an O&M Specialist, I worked with DeafBlind individuals learning how to independently and safely travel. Lastly, I worked as a Case Manager with Deaf individuals providing assistance in various aspects of their lives. I have been working in this field for 13+ years.
