Building Pathways to Independence and Achievement

Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) is pleased to announce our expanded Summer 2025 Youth Programs, featuring new specialized tracks designed to build independence, career readiness, and essential skills for DeafBlind youth.

For youth who are DeafBlind, the transition to college and careers presents unique challenges that require specialized support. HKNC’s summer programs address these needs through hands-on experiences, peer connections, and expert guidance from professionals who understand the diverse needs of DeafBlind individuals.

Our expanded 2025 summer offerings include three innovative new programs alongside our established initiatives, all hosted at our scenic Sands Point campus. Each program combines focused skill development with recreational activities, New York City adventures, and opportunities to build lasting friendships with peers who share similar experiences.

Introducing New Programs for Summer 2025

STEAM Pathways (August 4-8)

Our newest program, STEAM Pathways, offers transition-age students (14-22) an immersive week exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math careers. Through tactile methods and assistive technology, students will build essential Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) skills, including self-advocacy, career exploration, and workplace readiness.

This hands-on program engages participants in solving real-world challenges through interactive projects while teaching valuable prototyping skills using Swell paper, 3D printing, and DIY electronics. Students will explore accessible tech tools tailored to their individual needs, develop professional portfolio materials, and build self-determination through collaborative projects and presentations.

A highlight of the program is connecting with industry professionals through a dedicated STEAM panel, where participants can form valuable relationships with role models and peers who share their interests and experiences. These connections often prove invaluable as students navigate their educational and career journeys.

The STEAM Pathways program represents an exciting new dimension in our youth programming. By introducing DeafBlind youth to accessible technology and STEAM careers, we’re opening doors to fields that have traditionally presented barriers. These experiences build both technical skills and the confidence needed to pursue higher education and careers in these growing industries.

College Bound Program (July 7-11)

The College Bound program offers an immersive experience that prepares students for successful campus life. Participants will experience dormitory living, master campus navigation, practice requesting classroom accommodations, and learn to use essential online platforms like Canvas and Blackboard.

Students will develop critical self-advocacy and independent living skills alongside other DeafBlind peers, creating a solid foundation for collegiate success. The program balances practical skills development with social activities, helping participants build the confidence and connections needed for a smooth transition to college life.

Braille Adventure (July 28-August 1)

The Braille Adventure is a fun-filled, interactive learning experience where youth can enhance their braille skills in a supportive environment. Guided by DeafBlind community leaders and skilled instructors, participants set and work toward personal braille literacy goals through engaging activities and practical applications.

The program combines focused learning with social activities and NYC adventures, making literacy development an exciting journey. Whether students are new to braille or looking to enhance existing skills, this program provides personalized support in a collaborative environment where youth can connect with peers and mentors who understand the importance of braille literacy.
