Exploring Pathways to Independence: Guide Dog Seminar and Juno Walks
HKNC participants experienced guide dog partnerships firsthand during an August collaboration with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, featuring expert seminars and hands-on Juno Walks
In August, HKNC hosted an inspiring collaboration with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, bringing together expert mobility instructors Melissa Carney and a specialist from their DeafBlind program for an engaging two-hour seminar. The comprehensive presentation explored the unique partnership between guide dogs and their handlers, emphasizing how this teamwork creates new pathways to independence and confidence.
Participants gained valuable insights into the thorough training process required to become a guide dog handler, learning about Guiding Eyes’ intensive two-week campus program that serves students with personalized instruction. The presentation highlighted the organization’s commitment to accessibility, offering specialized training for DeafBlind individuals with ASL-proficient instructors and professional interpreters.
A key focus was the critical importance of mastering orientation and mobility skills, including white cane navigation techniques, before considering guide dog training. The instructors emphasized that these foundational skills enhance safety and effectiveness when working with a guide dog partner.
The highlight of our event was the hands-on Juno Walks, where HKNC participants, including some of our Summer Program youths, experienced firsthand what it feels like to navigate with a guide dog. These practice walks provided invaluable insight into the trust, communication, and teamwork essential to successful guide dog partnerships.
