These transcripts of how to sign various technology-related terms have been described for a person who is right hand dominant.  If a user is left hand dominant, please reverse hands.

A

Accessibility – Both palms facing down flat “B” handshape, left hand stays stationary in front of the chest, fingers pointing right, while right hand slides underneath the left hand, starting near the thumb of the left hand, until all the fingers can be seen on the other side, and then points slightly up. Pull the hand back out, and repeat motion.

AIM: Fingerspell ‘AIM’

Alt (alternative) – Fingerspell ‘ALT’

Alva Braille Controller –  Alva: Fingerspell ‘Alva’, Braille: place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Control: Place both hands in “X” handshape in front of chest, approximately 12 inches apart, with palms facing each other and knuckles pointing forward. Move hands forward and back with a repeated alternating movement.

Android – Fingerspell ‘Android’.

Arrow keys – Place right hand in “1” handshape, in front of chest with palm facing out and index finger facing up. Point up twice, down, twice and then to the right and left. Fingerspell ‘Key’.

B

Backslash – The right hand is held in a “Flat B” handshape in front of the chest with the palm facing left and fingers facing forward. Make a slashing motion by raising the hand up and to the right and then down and to the left. 

Backspace- Fingerspell ‘BACKSPACE’ or with the right hand in “1” handshape in front of the chest, palm facing in, index finger pointing left, move the hand left and then back in a quick jerking motion and repeat.

Bluetooth – Blue: With right hand in ‘B’ handshape, in front of chest, palm facing left, rotate wrist left and right and repeat.  Tooth: point to a tooth with your right index finger.

Braille – Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.

BrailleBack/TalkBack – Fingerspell ‘BrailleBack’ and ‘TalkBack’.

Braille EDGE – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.  EDGE: fingerspell ‘Edge’

Braille cells – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.  Cells: Fingerspell the word ‘cells’

Braille display – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Display: With the hands facing each other in front of the chest, form a ‘d’ with your right hand and touch it to the left palm in “5” handshape. Shake the hands slightly, forward and back, a few times.

Braille keyboard – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Keyboard: With both hands, in the “5” handshape, palms facing down, move in an up and down short repetitive movements as if typing on a braille keyboard. Or you can use the sign for “keyboard”

BrailleNote Apex 32 QT (can be used as a braille display) – Braille Note: Fingerspell ‘BN’.  Apex: Place both hands in ‘Flat B’ handshape, in front of chest, approximately 12 inches apart, palms facing each other with fingers pointed upward and slightly inward. Move both hands upward and towards each other until the tips of the fingers reach, as if making the top of a triangle.  QT: Fingerspell ’32 QT’

BrailleNote Apex 32 BT (can be used as a braille display) – BrailleNote: Fingerspell ‘BN’.  Apex: Place both hands in ‘Flat B’ handshape, in front of chest, approximately 12 inches apart, palms facing each other with fingers pointed upward and slightly inward. Move both hands upward and towards each other until the tips of the fingers reach, as if making the top of a triangle.  32 BT: Fingerspell ‘32 BT’

Braille Notetaker – Braille Notetaker: Fingerspell the letters “BN” or: Braille: place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Braille Sense OnHand – Braille Sense on Hand: Fingerspell ‘BS ONHAND’.

Or: Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.  Sense: With right hand in “1” handshape touch the right side of forehead with pointer finger.

Braille Terminal Mode – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Terminal Mode: Fingerspell ‘Terminal Mode’

Braille View – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. View: Move the fingers of the right “V” hand, palm facing in, from middle finger touching right upper cheek, below the eye, forward approximately 2 inches. Or: Braille View: With both hands in “Open X” handshape in front of face, palms facing each other, approximately 12 inches apart.  Start with index finger and thumb approximately an inch away from each other on each hand and then move hand slightly upward and outward and open the index finger and thumb to approximately 2 inches.

Brailliant BI – Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Then with the right hand in “Open 8” handshape, touch the right side of the forehead with the middle finger and twist the hand forward so the finger is pointing away from the body. Then fingerspell ‘BI’.

Built in: Built: Place both hands, in “H” handshape, in front of chest facing each other, palms facing down with right pointer and middle finger slightly above left pointer and middle finger. Move right fingers downward, brushing past left fingers and then repeat with left fingers coming down on right fingers. In: Place left hand, in “Flat O” handshape, in front of chest, fingers facing right.  Place right hand, in “Flat O” handshape, palm facing down, above left hand and move right fingers downward into the space created between the thumb and fingers of the left hand.

C

Cellular service – Cell: fingerpell ‘cell’, Service:  with both hands in “5” handshape, palms facing up in front of the chest, alternate moving each hand forward and backward a few times.

Chord: Fingerspell ‘CHORD’

Command – With both hands in “1” handshape, palms facing out, index finger facing up.  Tip of pointer of right hand is placed at the left corner of the mouth and left hand is placed approximately 4 inches in front of the mouth.  Bring both fingers forward with a deliberate movement, ending with both palms facing downward.

Computers: Place left arm in front of chest with left hand in “Flat B” handshape, palm facing down and fingers pointing right. With right hand in “C” handshape, palm facing out, slide right hand with base of thumb on left arm from the wrist to the forearm of the left arm and repeat.

Computer Screen: Computer: Place left arm in front of chest with left hand in “Flat B” handshape, palm facing down and fingers pointing right. With right hand in “C” handshape, palm facing out, slide right hand with base of thumb on left arm from the wrist to the forearm of the left arm and repeat. Screen: With both hands in the “1” handshape, palms facing downward, index fingers touching, draw a square in the air by moving both fingers away from each other and then down and then back to each other.

Contracted braille – Contracted: Start with both hands in “5” handshape, palms facing each other in front of the chest. Bring the hands together while closing into “s”hands ending with the little-finger side of the right “s” hand on the index-finger side of the left “s” hand. Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.

Convo – Fingerspell ‘CONVO’

Computer Braille Code – (CBC) – Fingerspell ‘CBC’

Computer – Desktop – place left arm in front of chest with palm facing down and fingers pointing right. Place right arm over left arm (approximately 2 inches above) with palm facing down and fingers pointing left. Bring right arm down so it touches left arm. Raise and repeat.

Computer – Laptops – Place left hand in “Flat B” handshape, palm facing up, fingers pointing right in front of chest. Place right hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm facing down, fingers pointing left, on top of left hand. Lift right hand off left hand with thumb while little finger of right hand remains in contact with thumb of left hand. Close and repeat as if closing and opening laptop.

CTRL (control) – With both hands in an “X” handshape in front of chest with palms facing each other and knuckles pointing forward, approximately 2 inches apart, alternate moving the hands forward and backward.

Cursor – Right hand is held in front of chest. Palm up, “G” handshape, thumb and index finger tap together several times, indicating the flashing of a vertical cursor symbol.

Cursor Routing Button – Fingerspell the letters ‘CRB’.

Curtain – Fingerspell ‘CURTAIN’

D

Del (delete) – With the right hand in an “X” handshape, place the thumb under the bent pointer finger and flick the thumb outward

Drag: Place left hand in front of chest in “Closed B” handshape, palm up and fingers facing forward. With right hand in “Open 5” handshape with bent fingers and palm facing down, place right hand, fingers touching base of left palm, and slide fingers up to base of fingers as if dragging on a touch screen.

Dongle: Fingerspell ‘DONGLE’

Double tap – Place the left hand in “Flat B” handshape in front of chest with palm facing up. With the index finger of the right hand in “1” handshape, tap the center of the left palm and repeat.

Drop Box: Fingerspell ‘DROP BOX’

E

Easy Braille – Easy: Place the left hand in a “Flat B” handshape in front of the body, palm up, hand slightly bent at base of fingers. With the right hand in “Flat B” handshape, hand slightly bent at the base of fingers as well, with palm facing up, sweep the fingers of the right hand against the outside of the fingers of the left hand, moving  in an upward direction from finger to past fingernail and repeat. Braille: place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers pointing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille.

Edit field- Fingerspell ‘edit field’.

E-mail – Place left hand in front of chest in “flat C” handshape, palm facing right.  With right hand in “flat B” handshape, palm facing down and fingers pointing left, slide right hand through the fingers and thumb of the left hand and back again.

End – Place left hand in an “Open B” handshape, palm facing in, fingers pointing right, in front of chest. With left hand in an “Open B” handshape, palm facing left, fingers pointing forward, touch the outerside of the little finger on the right hand to the base of the pointer finger on the left hand (creating an X shape).  Slide the right hand from the base of the pointer to the tip of the pointer and then down in a rapid motion.

Enter – Place left hand in front of chest, in “Flat B” handshape, with palm facing down and fingers pointing right. With left hand in “Flat B” handshape, palm facing down and fingers pointing forward and slightly downward. Dive the right hand under the left hand, entering at the thumb of left hand and move hand upward and out past the little finger of the left hand.

Or: With the right hand in an “Open 8” handshape, palm facing forward and slightly downward, tap the middle finger as if you are tapping the enter button on a keyboard.

Embossing (braille) – Sign for Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille, followed by the sign for Print: Place left hand, in ‘Flat B’ handshape, palm up in front of the chest facing forward, while the right hand in “G” handshape, palm facing out is placed on the heel of the left hand with the base of the thumb touching the left hand.  Tap the index finger down to meet the thumb on the right hand and repeat.  Or: place left hand, palm down, in front of chest with  fingers pointing right.  Slide right hand, in “flat B handshape”, palm down, fingers pointing forward, underneath left hand, entering at the left thumb and coming out at the little finger. Then move fingers of  right hand in up and down motions while moving forward.

Escape – Place left hand “Open B” handshape in front of chest with palm down and fingers pointing forward. With the right hand in “1” handshape, place the index finger between the index and middle finger of the left hand and move index finger of right hand forward in a rapid motion.

ESYS – Fingerspell ‘ESYS’

Ethernet – Fingerspell ‘ETHERNET’

EuroBraille Esys – Euro: Place the right hand in the “E” handshape, palm facing in, at the right side of the forehead and move the hand in small counter clockwise circles.  Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across.the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. 

F

Field – Fingerspell ‘FIELD’

Flick – Place the left hand in “Flat B” handshape in front of the chest with palm facing up and fingers facing forward.  With the right hand in the “1” handshape, quickly drag the pointer finger across the palm of the left hand from the base of the thumb to the base of the little finger (direction can be different depending on action)

Focus 40 Blue – Focus 40: Fingerspell ‘Focus 40’.  Blue: with right hand in “B” handshape, in front of chest, palm facing left, rotate wrist left and write and repeat.

Form field – Form: With both hands in the shape of an “F” handshape, palms facing out, in front of face, index fingers touching, move hands away from each other and then down and then back towards each other as if drawing a box or “form” in the air.  Field: Fingerspell ‘FIELD’.

Function key- Fingerspell ‘FN KEY’

G

Gmail: Fingerspell ‘GMAIL’

Google – With the right hand in “G” handshape, palm facing left, move in small circles, in counter clockwise direction, a few times in front of the face.

GoogleTalk  – Google: With the right hand in “G” handshape, palm facing left, move in small circles, in counter clockwise direction, a few times in front of the face. Talk: Place the right hand in the “4” handshape in front of mouth, palm facing left and fingers facing upward, tap the exposed part of the index finger against the mouth and repeat.

H

Haptics – Left hand in “5’”handshape, palm facing out, is placed in front of chest.  With right hand in “5” handshape, fingers bent, palm facing in, “type” on left palm with right fingers.

Home – Place the fingers of the right hand, in the “flat O” handshape, palm facing left on the left cheek, near the mouth and then move upward in a diagonal to tap the upper cheek, near the right ear.

Hot keys – Hot:  Move the right hand, in “Claw 5” handshape, placed in front of the mouth, palm facing in, quickly move forward with a twist of the wrist ending with the palm facing down.  Keys:  Fingerspell ‘KEYS’

Interact – With both hands in “5” handshape, palm facing up, in front of chest, with fingers pointing forward, move both hands forward and back in alternating motion and repeat.  It is important to note that this sign may be signed differently depending on how it is being used.  It is indicating how a person interacts with a piece of technology.  If one is interacting with a touch screen the sign for “interact” may be signed with left hand in front of chest, in ‘Flat B’ handshape, palm facing in and slightly upward, fingers facing up and the right hand in “1” handshape, palm facing down.  The index finger of the right hand will swipe from the thumb of the left hand to the base of the little finger as if swiping the screen on a tablet.

Internet Relay – Internet: With both hands in “open 8” handshape in front of chest, palms facing each other, press only the 2 middle fingers together. Then, slightly twist the touching fingertips alternately, so that one palm slightly faces the body and the other palm slightly faces away from the body. Slightly twist alternately again so the hands are facing the opposite direction. Relay: both hands in the ‘R’ handshape, hands in front of the chest, palms facing each other, wrists crossed with the left hand in front of the right hand, both hands rotate opposite each other in a back and forth movement that covers a 45 degree angle.  Or:  Sign for Relay: place both hands in a “flat O” handshape approximately 12 inches apart in front of chest, palms facing up.  Move both hands towards each other until they cross at the wrist and then back again.

IP Relay- Fingerspell ‘IP’, Relay: both hands in the “R” handshape, hands in front of the chest, palms facing each other, wrists crossed with the left hand in front of the right hand, both hands rotate opposite each other in a back and forth movement that covers a 45 degree angle. Or: sign for Relay: Place both hands in a “Flat O” handshape approximately 12 inches apart in front of chest, palms facing up.  Move both hands towards each other until they cross at the wrist and then back again.

iPad – Place the left hand, in ‘Flat B” handshape, in front of chest, palm facing up and fingers facing forward. Place the right hand, in “I” handshape, palm facing inward and little finger pointing left on palm of left hand. Then lift right hand, open hand to “Flat B” handshape and rotate hand so palm is facing up, fingers pointing left and bring down to lay on palm of right hand.

iPad 4 Retina – Place the left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, in front of chest, palm facing up and fingers facing forward. Place the right hand, in “I” handshape, palm facing inward and little finger pointing left on palm of left hand. Then lift right hand, open hand to “Flat B” handshape and rotate hand so palm is facing up, fingers pointing left and bring down to lay on palm of right hand, then fingerspell ‘RETINA’

iPhone- Place right hand in “I” handshape, with palm facing out to right ear so the thumb is touching the ear and then with the right hand in the “Y” handshape, palm facing inward place the hand to the right ear as if holding a phone to your ear.

iPod Touch – Fingerspell ‘IPOD’, or place the left hand in “Flat B” handshape in front of the chest, palm facing down, fingers facing forward. With right hand in the “Open 8” handshape, palm facing down, fingers facing left, touch the back of the left hand with the middle finger of the right hand.

J

JAWS (Job Access with Speech) – Fingerspell ‘JAWS’

Keyboard – With both hands in “5” handshape, in front of chest, palms facing down, fingers bent, wiggle the fingers up and down repeatedly, as if typing on a keyboard.

Keyboard command – Keyboard: With both hands in “5” handshape, in front of chest, palms facing down, fingers bent, wiggle the fingers up and down repeatedly, as if typing on a keyboard.  Command: with both hands in “1” handshape, palms facing out, index finger pointing up.  Right hand is placed at the left corner of the mouth and left hand is placed approximately 4 inches in front of the mouth.  Bring both fingers forward with a deliberate movement, ending with both palms facing downward.

Mac OS X – Mountain Lion – fingerspell ‘Mac OS X’, Mountain: Place left hand, in “A” handshape, in front of chest, palm facing down and knuckles facing right. Tap the top of the left hand with the right hand in “A” handshape, palm facing down and knuckles facing forward and then open both hands to “Flat B” handshape, palms facing outward (slightly downward), fingers up and move hands forward and upward in a wavy movement with left hand higher than the right hand.  Lion: move the right “claw” hand, palm facing down from the forehead back over the head as if describing a lion’s mane.

MAGic – Place both hands in an ‘S’ handshape, in front of chest, palms facing forward. Then, bring them slightly forward and upward rapidly while opening both hands. The motion is as if a magician is making something appear out of thin air.

Mainstream – with both hands in “5” handshape in front of chest, palms in, fingers facing each other, move them together, left hand moving over right hand and then with left hand on top of right hand, fingers overlapping, move forward in one fluid motion.

P

PC (personal computer) – Fingerspell ‘PC’.

Perkins – Place the left hand in “5” handshape, in front of the chest, palm facing up and fingers pointing forward.  Place the right hand, in “P” handshape, palm facing down, on the center of the left hand’s palm so the middle finger of the right hand is touching the center of the left hands palm. Tap the middle finger of the right hand two times.

Perkins Braille Display – Perkins: Place the left hand in “5” handshape, in front of the chest, palm facing up and fingers facing forward.  Place the right hand, in “P” handshape, palm facing down, on the center of the left hand’s palm so the middle finger of the right hand is touching the center of the left hands palm. Tap the middle finger of the right hand two times. Braille: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, palm up, in front of the chest with fingers facing right.  With right hand in “5” handshape with bent fingers, palm facing down, slide the fingers across the left palm from wrist to fingers, as if you are reading braille. Pinch: Place left hand, in “Flat B” handshape, in front of chest, palm up with fingers pointing forward. POP3: Fingerspell ‘POP3’

Purple – With right hand in “P” handshape in front of chest, palm facing down, shake the sign for ‘P’ from left to right and repeat.

QWERTY keyboard – With both hands in “5” handshape in front of chest, fingers bent, palms down, move the fingers up and down as if typing on a keyboard, then fingerspell ‘QWERTY’. Or: Fingerspell ‘QT’

R

Refreshable Braille – Place the left hand, in “5” handshape, palm down, in front of chest with fingers pointing forward. Place right hand, in “5” handshape as well, beneath the left hand with fingers facing up and palm facing in.  Move right hand up so the fingers “intertwine” between left fingers and then back down again again and repeat.

Retinal Display- Fingerspell ‘RETINA DISPLAY’

Rotor – Place the left hand in “Flat B” handshape, in front of the chest, palm up and fingers pointing forward.  With the right hand in “G” handshape, palm facing down, place the tip of the index and thumb in the palm of the left hand and twist forward.

Safari: fingerspell ‘SAFARI’

Screen Readers: Screen: place both hands in “1” handshape in front of face with palms facing down and index fingers touching. Then move hands away from each other, downward and then back together as if drawing a “box or screen” in the air.
