Overview

If you’re looking for an unforgettable summer experience for your blind or low vision child, Camp Helen Keller is it! Run by Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB) on the Post Campus of LIU, the camp aims to improve self-esteem, self-confidence and socialization skills in children ages 4-15. Our low 3:1 camper-to-counselor ratio ensures that campers receive a high level of personal attention as they engage in activities and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Meet our Camp Director, Stephanie MacLennan!

Stephanie MacLennan has been working at Camp Helen Keller for over 20 years, and has been the program director since 2011. She is a licensed clinical social worker and supervisor, and specializes in development, mental health, and behavior among children with special needs, specifically sensory loss. She works with campers and their families to ensure that the five weeks at camp are meaningful and beneficial to each child’s progress. During the academic year, Stephanie works as a school social worker, but Camp Helen Keller holds a special place in her heart. She is always looking to expand camp activities, go on new and exciting field trips, and grow the program. She keeps a countdown to the first day of camp; she’s just as excited as the kids to start each season!

Building Confidence at Adventure Park – Video

[Music] Slow uplifting acoustic music plays.

This video shows a boy and girl camper from Camp Helen Keller on a field trip to Adventure Park. Adventure Park is set in the woods and offers zip lining, rope courses and other climbing activities. The video begins with a clip of the boy and girl riding across a practice zip line with the help of an instructor. Then, the boys walks through the park and the girl climbs upstairs to the top of a platform. Next, the girl is standing at the edge of a section of the elevated course, searching for where to place her foot. She hesitates but then raises her leg and steps across with confidence. The boys slowly crosses a similar elevated bridge. The video concludes with a short clip of the boy sitting at a table and smiling, and then fades to the Helen Keller Services logo and a QR code over a white background with the statement, “Creating memories one step at a time, Join Camp Helen Keller’s Journey.”
