The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in his or her community of choice. Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1967, HKNC is the only organization of its kind—providing training and resources exclusively to people age 16 and over who have combined vision and hearing loss. Students travel from across the country to our headquarters in Sands Point, New York, for on-campus training in assistive technology, vocational services, orientation and mobility, communication and independent living, and our regional offices bring HKNC resources to communities throughout the United States. We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a Senior Instructor in our Department of Independent Living. The Senior Instructor evaluates and provides training in, skills of independent living with students to foster a more independent and productive lifestyle in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.   

Facilitates activities related to Independent Living skills evaluation with the consumer to determine realistic short and long term goals.

Ensures services provided to students are person-centered and meet the students’ needs:

  1. Assess, through dialogue with student and team, the student’s training priorities
  2. Actively collaborate with team (including student) to design trans-disciplinary training activities, implement individualized program and evaluate progress through debriefing and further dialogue to identify further learning opportunities.    
  3. Communicates to all team members the student’s training priorities/ short and long term goals.
  4. Ensures the student’s involvement in decision making process with team throughout evaluation and training

Mentors Independent Living instructors and aides as necessary.

Plans lessons and provides skills training in the above areas based upon the findings of the evaluation, using specific methods and adaptations required to teach deaf-blind persons.

Documents student performance during evaluation and training sessions to monitor progress; identifies problems and constraints; develops strategies and remedies; and provides formal reports to funding sources.

In the absence of the Independent Living Supervisor the designated Senior Instructor acts as supervisor in order to assure smooth operation of the department, continuity of service and safety of students.

Provides assistance to students in out-of-department activities. This will include: out-of-department assignments, lounge duty, town hall, fire drills. This also includes home visits and service to both local and out-of-town deaf-blind students

Accompanies and serves as a guide and/or facilitates communication for students and professional Staff members when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion.

Performs related duties, when necessary, at the discretion of the Supervisor or Administration.


Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Teaching, or Special Education required preferably with experience in teaching blind or deaf blind individuals. Two years’ experience in teaching visually impaired, strongly prefer knowledge of Braille, sign language and/or the one hand manual alphabet. Knowledge of MS Office. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
