Part-Time Interpreter

The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in his or her community of choice. Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1967, HKNC is the only organization of its kind—providing training and resources exclusively to people age 16 and over who have combined vision and hearing loss. Students travel from across the country to our headquarters in Sands Point, New York, for on-campus training in assistive technology, vocational services, orientation and mobility, communication and independent living, and our regional offices bring HKNC resources to communities throughout the United States. We currently have a temporary career opportunity available as a part-time interpreter at our location in Sands Point.  The Interpreter would provide in-house interpreting to consumers, staff and outside visitors as required.  Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide in-house interpreting as required.
  • Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro-Tactile and/ or adaptation to accessible Communication to staff and students as assigned.
  • Provide in-house interpreting as required.
  • Provide communications training to assigned students. 
  • Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
  • May be required to teach and interpret for selected staff/students and others, other than during the regularly scheduled work period. If this is done daytime hours will be adjusted accordingly.
  • Maintain daily progress notes on assigned students and submit regular written reports to supervisor.
  • Assist in the preparation of learning aids, materials and curriculum.
  • Participate in meetings to understand the unique issues of students and plan a team approach for solving these issues.
  • Accompany and serve as guide and/or interpreter for students and professional staff members and guests, when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion, or travel to field sites, meetings, etc. Some evening hours may be scheduled based upon students or staff needs. Must be flexible with work schedule and travel when necessary. 
  • Shares responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
  • Perform work related duties, when necessary, at the discretion of the Interpreting Supervisor and/or members of Administration.


Bachelor’s degree required from an Interpreting Training Program. Two to three years of interpreting experience with individuals who are deaf-blind and/or deaf-visually impaired required. Must have passed written RID test prior to hire and also obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 3 years of employment. Proficiency in methods of communication utilized by individuals who are deaf-blind. Some evening hours may be scheduled based upon students or staff needs and must be flexible with travel when needed. 

This position is part-time (21 hours per week) and temporary (6 months).
