HKNC Partners to Host a Mini Transition Institute

HKNC, in collaboration with the Delaware Program for Children with Deafblindness and the New Jersey Center on Deafblindness, are hosting a Virtual Transition Institute for the 2022-2023 school year. A variety of online workshops for students and families will be offered centering around self-advocacy for DeafBlind transition-aged youth (ages 14-21).

TOPICS: Self-Advocacy: “Don’t Forget About Me!”

  • December 2022: The Dream Team: Creating, Building and Using My Support Team. Transition-aged DeafBlind students and their families will explore how to create and build a support team that follows them through high school and into post-secondary life. Being able to use and adjust a support team is an integral part of transition planning for young adults.
  • February 2023: Hopes and Dreams. Transition-aged DeafBlind students and their families will explore interests, strengths and preferences of each young adult. Activities will help identify likes and dislikes to be included in the IEP and for future planning purposes in the postsecondary world.
  • April 2023: Transition Planning: An Advocate’s Perspective. What are the common struggles families face during transition planning? How can families address these challenges? Families of transition-aged DeafBlind students will explore common challenges and potential solutions to these challenges when coordinating services and supports for their child.
  • May/June 2023: Culminating Conference
