Helen Keller Services and JCC Brooklyn Presents Camp for Children who are Blind or have Low Vision

The Camp for Children who are Blind or Have Low Vision is covered by the generous donations of the Lavelle Foundation for the Blind, The Butler Foundation, and New York Community Trust as well as Board of JCC Brooklyn, JCC Brooklyn Families, and Supporters.

The Camp for Blind Youth is the first-of-its-kind day camp in Brooklyn designed specifically for children who are blind or have Low vision ages 7 through 14. We’re proud to launch this program in partnership with JCC Brooklyn. Inclusiveness is central to our mission, and we’re committed to making sure that the kids who participate in our Camp for Children who are Blind or have Low Vision have the same high-quality, enriching and fun experiences as kids in other day camps.

Our experienced instructors are passionate about teaching and inspiring kids to embrace the wonders of Summer Camp. They will guide your child through each activity, offering personalized attention and support every step of the way.

Camp Information

When:

August 7-18th, 2023
Week 1: August 7-11, 2023
Week 2: August 14-18, 2023

Where:

Outdoors on the country-like campus of the Ft. Hamilton Army Base in the heart of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

Camp Hours:

8am-4pm Monday through Friday

Fee:

Camp is FREE. However, a $100 Registration Fee will apply as a deposit. The deposit is entirely refundable upon the completion of the camp (08/18/2023). **Refunds will be distributed after 09/01/2023. If the child does not attend the camp, deposits will not be refunded.

Meet our Special Needs Director, Irina Kocherova!

Irina has devoted over 30 years of her life focusing on work with children with special needs. Her primary passion was working with blind and DeafBlind youngsters. Seeing their incremental triumphs and successes has always brought true joy and fulfillment to her life. Irina holds multiple degrees, including a Masters in T.V.I (Teacher of Vision Impaired) from State Pedagogical University, a Masters in Speech Pathology from State Pedagogical University, a Masters in Special Ed/General Ed Birth- Grade 2 from Touro College, and a Masters in Teacher of Students with Severe and Multiple Disabilities including Autism from Touro College. Irina is inspired by children’s passion for exploring and is excited to bring that passion into her classroom.

Irina loves leading play groups, sing alongs, and loves taking her kids on long scavenger hunts to find that perfect Autumn leaf. Irina is passionate, honest and will never give up until she reaches her goal. She loves educating and sharing children’s experiences of the world with them.
