Janet Sarro

Janet Sarro

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Janet Sarro, former Director of the Nassau Senior Center. Janet retired last year after more than 30 years of unparalleled dedication and service.

After losing her sight in her right eye in 1985, Janet received rehabilitation services from HKSB. Her vision improved greatly and she regained her driving privileges. She soon thereafter began volunteering at HKSB’s senior center in Hempstead, assisting with various projects, including crafts and games participation. In 1992, Janet was named the Senior Center's Director. She was a much beloved colleague and we will miss her greatly.

Services will be at Flinch & Bruns Funeral Home, 34 Hempstead Avenue, Lynbrook, New York. Details.

Welcome to 2013!

This month VisionAware is showcasing National Braille Literacy Month and Glaucoma Awareness Month by featuring blog posts and articles relating to both topics. Guest blogger Daniel Aronoff, New York City's premier blind food critic, and Deanna Noriega and Empish Thomas, VisionAware peer advisors, have posted articles about their personal journeys and the importance of braille literacy. Be sure to read and comment on these interesting and relevant blogs.

In honor of Glaucoma Awareness month, VisionAware has added an audio of a lecture on “Understanding Glaucoma” by Nalini Aggarwal, MD. Also, Maureen Duffy, VisionAware’s Social Media Specialist, has written an excellent blog about some breaking research on glaucoma and early predictors.

Helen Keller Services for the Blind is the January agency of the month. They offer a wide range of services and programs for people of all ages who are blind or have vision impairments in the New York metropolitan area and Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In honor of Glaucoma Month, Helen Keller Services suggests these useful tips on managing your glaucoma medications.
