Direct Support Professionals Needed, OPWDD Services, Hempstead and Wantagh
Summary: Direct Support Professionals are responsible for providing support and supervision to our program consumers and consumers at the residence. Each Direct Support Professional must participate in promoting the 3IP philosophy (Inclusion, Integration, Independence and Productivity). Each Direct Support Professional will function directly under the supervision of an Habilitation Specialist or Program Supervisor. Learn the treatment plan methodologies for all individuals in the assigned area, including mobility and all clinical methodologies, and implement the methodologies as written. On a daily basis, record data accurately. Participate actively in planned area meetings and events.
Qualifications and Experience: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. An Associate's Degree in related area from an accredited college or HS Diploma or GED. Valid NYS Driver's License. Preferably one year of experience working with the blind and/or the developmentally disabled. Knowledge of OPWDD regulations.
Home-Based Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Per Diem, Children’s Learning Center, Brooklyn
Summary: Home-based Teachers of the Visually Impaired are needed for Early Intervention/Home-based program in Brooklyn and Queens for children who are blind/visually impaired. The children may also have multiple impairments. This position is paid hourly, per diem in which the teacher goes into the family’s home and works with the child in half hour sessions. The teacher is responsible for all aspects of teaching the child, who is 9 months to 3 years of age. The teacher collaborates with parents and members of each child’s therapy team to discuss progress regarding IFSP outcomes. Early Intervention paperwork, such as session notes and progress notes are required.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be New York State Certified as a teacher of the visually impaired. Applicant needs a Master’s Degree in Special Education or in Visually Impairments. Experience with handicapped youngsters is preferred.
Sign Language Instructor (Part-time; Per Diem)—Children’s Learning Center, Brooklyn
Summary: ASL instructor will use American Sign Language and use activities that teach students how to sign.
Qualifications: ASL Certified Interpreter/Maintains certification by completing continuing education units required by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); Must have genuine interest in educating disabled children and adults/caregivers of children with special needs; Preferred 5 years experience in American Sign Language within deaf community; Must high level of teaching skill and patience; Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
Teacher’s Aide, Morning Shifts 9:00 am – 11:30 am, Brooklyn
Summary: Teacher’s Aides are responsible for providing individual instruction to the students as directed by the teacher and guided by goals and objectives on the IEP. Supports individual students during group instruction as needed and directed to do. Attend to children when they are communicating, respect that communication, and respond to them appropriately. Encourage communication, play and social interaction between children.

Vehicle Driver
Summary: We are currently looking for a Vehicle
Driver to help transport consumers to and from our day programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Other duties may be assigned.
- To drive consumers to and from their program safely and in a timely fashion.
- Possessing a general knowledge of OPWDD regulations and guidelines.
- Act as a liaison between the residence and program by delivering mail or program funds, if necessary.
- Have a thorough knowledge of the vehicle routes.
- Help individuals with their personal belongings as needed.
- Assist individuals on and off the bus safely and enforce proper mobility.
- Complete all other assignments as indicated by your supervisor.
- Ensure that the vehicle is cleaned and maintained at all times.
Qualifications and Experience: A High School diploma /GED. Experience working with individuals who have a developmental disability strongly preferred. Individual must have and maintain a clean NYS, valid driver’s license.
Volunteer Opportunities
Help Prevent Sight Loss in Children—Volunteers are needed to vision-screen preschool age children in the Kings County community. We will train and pay for your background check. For information, please call Bill Dale at 516-485-1234, extension 607 or email info@helenkeller.org.
Volunteers are needed in our Hempstead Senior Center to assist with our active Center programming. We are open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 2 pm. Help is needed in the areas of transportation, crafts, games, exercise, meal service, and special trips.
